Multistage Spray Dryers & Agglomerated Spray Drying Plants

AKSH Engineering Systems Pvt. Ltd. is a trusted manufacturer, supplier, and exporter of high-efficiency Multistage Spray Dryers in India. Engineered to combine primary spray drying with integrated secondary fluid bed drying, our multi-stage drying systems produce superior non-dusty, free-flowing, and instantly soluble agglomerated powders while significantly reducing energy consumption.

Whether processing heat-sensitive food products, dairy derivatives, sticky hygroscopic extracts, or specialized chemical formulations, AKSH Engineering custom-designs multistage spray drying systems engineered for your exact moisture, particle size, and thermal sensitivity requirements.

What is a Multistage Spray Dryer?

A Multistage Spray Dryer splits the drying process into two or three distinct thermal stages. In the first stage, liquid feed is atomized inside the main drying chamber, where water is partially evaporated to leave a controlled residual moisture level. The semi-dry agglomerated powder then falls directly into an integrated fluid bed (second stage) for gentle final drying and cooling (third stage).

By separating initial moisture removal from final moisture removal, multistage drying operates at lower exhaust air temperatures. This protects thermal quality, enhances powder instantability, and slashes specific energy consumption compared to single-stage spray dryers.

Key Operating Stages of Our Multistage Systems

  1. Stage 1: Primary Atomization & Evaporation

Liquid feed is atomized via high-pressure nozzles or rotary disk atomizers into hot drying air. Water evaporates rapidly, forming semi-dry particles with surface moisture that promotes gentle particle agglomeration.

  2. Stage 2: Integrated Fluid Bed Drying

Moist, agglomerated particles descend directly onto a stationary integrated fluid bed at the bottom of the drying chamber. Low-temperature air passes through the bed to complete moisture removal without thermal degradation.

  3. Stage 3: External Fluid Bed Cooling & Conditioning

The dried powder is transferred to an external vibrating fluid bed cooler, where conditioned ambient or chilled air lowers powder temperature prior to packaging to prevent caking.

Key Advantages of AKSH Multistage Spray Dryers

  • Superior Instant & Agglomerated Powders: Produces coarse, porous, dust-free granules with exceptional cold-water dispersibility and instant wetting properties.

  • Higher Energy Efficiency: Operating with higher inlet and lower exhaust temperatures cuts specific steam and fuel consumption by up to 15–25%.

  • Gentle Heat Treatment: Reduced particle thermal exposure preserves natural color, flavor, active bio-compounds, and nutritional profiles.

  • Handles Sticky & Thermally Sensitive Feeds: Integrated fluidization prevents wall deposition and lump formation when processing hygroscopic or high-fat slurries.

Frequently Asked Questions

A single-stage spray dryer completes all moisture removal inside the primary chamber, requiring higher exhaust temperatures that can degrade heat-sensitive materials. A multistage spray dryer leaves residual moisture in the primary chamber and finishes drying gently on an integrated fluid bed, resulting in better energy efficiency and superior agglomerated powder quality.

Multistage systems allow semi-wet particles to collide and bind together (agglomerate) before final drying. This creates a porous granule structure that dissolves instantly in liquids without forming lumps, ideal for instant drinks, baby food, and dairy powders.

Yes. We design hygienic multistage spray drying plants equipped with automated Clean-in-Place (CIP) spray nozzles, retractable cleaning devices, and polished SS316L surfaces to comply with strict cGMP, FDA, and 3-A sanitary guidelines.
